Healing Begins in the Cell: My Conversation with Dr. Will Cole

Why do so many people feel exhausted, mentally foggy, metabolically unwell, or simply older than they should, even when their routine laboratory results are described as “normal”? That question is at the heart of my fascinating conversation with Dr. Will Cole on this episode of The Empowering Neurologist.

Dr. Cole is a functional medicine practitioner and the coauthor, with Dr. Josh Axe, of the new book Heal Your Cells: Reversing the Irreversible. Their central argument is both simple and important: Long before disease becomes obvious, dysfunction may already be developing within our cells. This is a particularly meaningful concept when we consider the brain.

The brain accounts for only about 2% of our body weight, yet it consumes approximately 20% of our energy, at rest. This energy is generated largely by our mitochondria, the tiny structures within our cells that convert the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe into usable energy. When mitochondria become less efficient, the consequences may extend far beyond feeling tired. Neurons become less resilient. Blood-sugar regulation may falter. Oxidative stress increases. And microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells, may shift into a more inflammatory state. This helps us understand why metabolic dysfunction, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, environmental exposures, inactivity, and prolonged psychological stress can ultimately become threats to the brain. These factors may look very different on the surface, but at the cellular level, they often converge on the same fundamental systems.

During our conversation, Dr. Cole explains what he means by “cellular healing” and why treating an isolated symptom may often not address the biology producing it. We explore the roles of mitochondrial health, nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, environmental toxins, movement, sleep, circadian rhythm, and emotional stress.

We also discuss why personalization matters. There is no single diet, supplement program, or longevity strategy that is right for every person. Our uniqueness in terms of genes, microbiomes, metabolic health, exposures, medications, and life experiences all influence what our cells require. The real goal is not to follow the most popular protocol. It is to identify and address the factors that are interfering with your own biology. Importantly, we also examine some of the more advanced approaches presented in the book, including peptides, biological-age testing, red-light therapy, ozone therapy, stem cells, and plasma exchange. These interventions are receiving enormous attention, but enthusiasm must always be balanced with careful evaluation of the evidence, potential risks, and cost.

One especially interesting part of the book describes an intervention involving 110 people who followed a structured program incorporating nutrition, movement, sleep optimization, stress reduction, and targeted supplementation. The authors report improvements across numerous markers of cellular and organ health. I ask Dr. Cole to explain the study design, what was actually measured, and how we should interpret the results. Ultimately, this discussion is about empowerment. Our cells are not passive victims of the passage of time. They are continually responding to information from the food we eat, the activity we pursue, the sleep we prioritize, the stress we experience, and the environments in which we live.

We cannot control every aspect of aging or disease. But we can influence many of the signals our cells receive each day. And when we improve those signals, we create an environment that better supports energy production, repair, resilience, and long-term brain health. I hope you’ll join me for this thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation with Dr. Will Cole on The Empowering Neurologist.
