I have a history of Alzheimer’s disease in my family, as it has afflicted my mother, sister and several aunts. In my own life, I recently noticed that my recall for nouns is slipping and I couldn’t turn up the simplest of words. I decided to stop eating gluten. After two gluten-free weeks, I had a big bowl of pasta, got in my car and realized I couldn’t find my way to tai chi class. When I managed to get there I was unable to follow the form. It was really frightening. Later, I tried with a bowl of cereal and something similar happened. I tried following this elimination-style diet 3 more times with similar results. Now, I fully follow a gluten-free, low-carb diet. Two years after all that, and I can recall most words with only the occasional lapse in time. I am so grateful.
